Two years ago at the ides of March we have come to the gates of an incomprehensible success. We were hosting the stars of the Turkish giant Fenerbahce for a decisive game three at 1-1 in the Euroleague Women quarter finals. What happened is unbelievable to this day! Thanks to a great team effort we destroyed our opponents, and celebrated our second ever Final4 qualification!
Fans started gathering an hour and a half before tip-off in the arena, and the girls cmae on court to start warming up in a fantastic atmosphere.
18 seconds into the game we were already ahead. Aleks made a lay-up and then she was successful from the paint in the next offensive possession (1st minute 4-0)! The guests turned the game their way with baskets by Vaughn and Sottana (4-6), while at the other end Yvonne and Jeca put the team on their back, and regained the lead for us (5th minute 9-6). The teams were neck and neck afterwards, but the end of the period went better for the guests, and so the scoreboard showed a slight away lead (10th minute 17-21).
We opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run forcing Fenerbahce to call a time-out two minutes into the period (12th minute 24-23). A huge battle was going on between the sides, but neither was able to top the other, however, we had a small advantage by the half-time break thanks to a basket by Yvonne (20th minute 33-31).
The second half was opened by a great showing from Danielle Page, whose two made shots worth five points erupted the arena (22nd minute 38-31)! What’s more, by the middle of the quarter our advantage got to ten points after a free throw by Aleks (26th minute 47-37), from which we had managed to keep nine until the end of the third period (30th minute 52-43).
Jeca got the ball in the corner. We got the final stage of the game going with a triple. That also marked the beginning of a six-and-a-half-minute-long 12-0 scoring run, to which the Turkish put an end with a free throw (37th minute 64-44). In the final minutes we were able to afford making some trick moves as well. We entertained our fans who were celebrating with two minutes left on the game clock with an “exhibition game”. In the end Cora made another shot, but nobody cared anymore (40th minute 67-46)!
SOPRON BASKET - FENERBAHCE SK 67-46 (17-21, 16-10, 19-12, 15-3)
Roberto Iniguez: I have mixed feelings. I am very sad about the tragedy that hurt Alaina. On the other hand I am very happy about the result! I don't know what to say, everyone saw what we have done! We have worked hard every day and believed strongly in ourselves, to be able to make it for Alaina. What we have accomplished is incredible! We have an extremely hard week behind ourselves. After the second game we weren't sure if Aleks could play today or not, but she joined in the battle even with her legs hurting, just like Angela after the anaphylactic shock. I am absolutely proud! The played very well together, and we played for Alaina today, too! I hope she can be with us in the FINAL4 again. This is her team, her second home, we are here for her! The girls have deserved the FINAL4. We are a young team and have caused a huge surprise! I can get ready for my fifth FINAL4, I was there with all of my teams, and I know what it feels like, but my players didn't realize what they have accomplished today! We owe a huge thank you to the fans for their support, we were flying with them today! Even one hour before the game we got a great boost from them when we walked out on court to warm up. We have already won the game there! I am very tired, I have been working restlessly since August 15th. Tonight I'm going to drink a beer, and then I'll go to sleep, and tomorrow I will have rest. I will set aside basketball for a day.
