After winning the cup title in Körmend we went into the championship finals series without the home-court advantage. We managed to clinch the title in a five-game series in overtime that went right down to the wire!
Both sides missed their first chances, but after a minute and a half first Zane’s and then Iványi’s efforts were rewarded by points. The game to which both sides prepared very well had its ups and downs (5th minute 7-8). Most of the baskets were made from under the rim, both sides were trying to force the ball inside the paint. With the first triple of the game scored by Marissa we got into a five-point advantage (10-15). At the end of the quarter Betty Németh and Dalma Iványi scored, so we were heading into the next period in possession of a three-point lead (10th minute 17-20).
Coming off the bench Zsófi Varga found a hole in the opposition’s defense, while at the other end Quigley hit the target twice (12th minute 21-24). Wit ha basket by Griffin the home side caught up with us thirteen minutes into the game (26-26). However, Amber made sure that they wouldn’t take over the lead. It was a really exciting game, and fortunately, we were able to resist Pécs’s offensive efforts, which meant that we were going into the second half leading the game (20th minute 36-38).
At the beginning of the third period the home side took over the lead for a little while, but then we switched to zone defense. It worked, because after that came three failed attempts by Pécs in offense, forcing Zeljko Djokic to call a time-out (23rd minute 41-46). In the 27th minute Marissa who has been playing fantastically has increased our lead to six points (48-54), but Pécs turned the game their way with a 7-0 run. We called a time-out after a triple by Sarok (28th minutr 55-54). Kata hit one after the short break, and Amber was also successful from behind the three-point line, resulting in a four-point lead before the fourth period (30th minute 57-61).
Amber opened the quarter with a triple, to which Quigley answered back likewise (32nd minute 60-64). Even though Iványi got her fourth personal foul she stayed on court, and after a steal she handed out an assist to Krnjic. After that came Zsófia fegyverneky and tied the game up with an accurate shot two minutes before the final buzzer (38th minute 68-68). After an exchange of baskets by Amber and Krnjic came another one “presented by” Tina and Griffin, who set the final score of regulation. Since no decision was made, overtime was coming up (40th minute 72-72)!
Griffin scored the first points of the extra period after a minute went by, while Amber hit one at the other end. Marissa answered back to yet another double by Griffin with a triple, and after Zane Tamane’s basket Zeljko Djokic had to call a time-out (76-79). With 38 seconds on the clock zane wouldn’t miss, giving her team a five-point advantage, but Quigley kept her team’s hopes alive with a triple (79-81)! The home side obviously decided to foul intentionally. Amber’s two foul shots came off the rim, but we got the rebound, with 13 seconds remaining. Then came another foul from Pécs, but this time Amber wouldn’t miss (45th minute 79-83)!
